'Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle - Mahjong Solitaire & Sichuan Province' is a new Android puzzle game developed by us, Hiroshi Studio. Its biggest draw? It lets you play two beloved mahjong tile puzzles, Mahjong Solitaire and Sichuan Province (Shisen-Sho), all within a single, easy-to-use app!

But it's not just about packing two games into one. True to its "brain training" concept, we've designed it with a focus on seniors, making sure it's easy to pick up and play. For many puzzle game enthusiasts, Mahjong Solitaire needs no introduction. You'll see mahjong tiles stacked in intricate, three-dimensional layouts. Your mission is to select pairs of identical tiles and remove them from the board until every tile is gone.

But there's a catch! You can only select tiles that meet specific conditions:

No other tiles are resting directly on top of them.
At least one side (left or right) is clear and unobstructed.

This seemingly simple rule hides a deep layer of strategy. Which tiles should you clear first? Which should you save? One wrong move could leave you stuck. But don't worry! As we'll explain in more detail later, our game guarantees that every single board is solvable, so you can play stress-free from start to finish.

This is where things get interesting! You'll need to carefully observe the gaps between tiles and the overall layout to visualize the connecting paths. It's a fantastic way to train your spatial reasoning and foresight.

Sichuan Province features 60 unique layouts and also comes with three difficulty levels. You might find it surprisingly easy at first, especially since you can use the outer perimeter of the board as a pathway. But as the layouts get more complex, you'll really need to put your thinking cap on!

One of the most frustrating things about mahjong solitaire or Sichuan Province can be getting stuck, realizing that a puzzle is impossible to clear. It's a real buzzkill when you've been concentrating hard, only to be defeated by bad luck.

We wanted to eliminate this stress entirely. That's why we implemented a unique logic to generate only boards that are "guaranteed to be cleared" from start to finish!

This wasn't an easy feat. Simply randomizing tile placements often leads to unsolvable configurations. So, we devised and implemented a unique algorithm that creates puzzle boards by "reverse-playing" a clear sequence. This means you can confidently play any layout, knowing it's always solvable. You'll never have to give up due to bad luck again!

Stuck? Just Ask for a Hint!

"I can't find the next move..." "Am I stuck?" When you're in a pinch, don't hesitate to use the hint feature! Simply tap the 💡 (lightbulb) button in the top-right corner of the screen, and two matching tiles will glow, showing you a solvable pair.

Of course, using a hint will slightly reduce your score, but it's much better than getting stuck and giving up! It's especially useful for beginners, or when you're a bit tired and your concentration is waning. Feel free to rely on it!

Behind the Scenes: Hiroshi Studio's Passion and Innovation!

'Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle' is our second release at Hiroshi Studio. After developing our first app, "Sakura Map" (an app for locating cherry blossom spots across Japan), we wanted to create something even more widely accessible and fun to play. That's why we chose the mahjong puzzle genre.

Development involved many challenges and innovations. Let us share a few key points we focused on:

Achieving the "Guaranteed Clear" Algorithm: As mentioned earlier, implementing this feature was truly demanding. Simply randomizing tiles inevitably leads to unsolvable boards. To avoid this, we extensively tested multiple patterns of our unique "reverse-play algorithm" to create solvable layouts.
3D Tile Representation: Initially, the tiles had a flatter appearance. Comparing with competitor apps, we felt we needed more depth. So, we enhanced the layer offset (making tiles appear stacked in a staircase-like manner), added shadows and highlights assuming a light source from the top-left, significantly improving the visual quality. This makes the stacked tiles look more realistic and easier to perceive.
Multilingual Support: Driven by the desire to reach global users, we thoroughly utilized Flutter's standard internationalization features (ARB files and flutter_localizations) to achieve both Japanese and English support.
Switchable Tile Art: Providing not just authentic mahjong tiles but also cute "fruit and sweets" versions for children was another point of emphasis. This wasn't just for aesthetics; it also served as a universal design choice, allowing those unfamiliar with mahjong tiles to easily identify pairs by familiar pictures. We designed all 34 SVG-based artworks ourselves, giving each a specific theme.

All these efforts stem from our passion to make the game more enjoyable and comfortable for our users. Technically, we developed the game primarily using Google's Flutter framework and the Dart programming language. While the Android version is releasing first, we are considering an iOS version in the future, so iPhone users can look forward to it!
