The Frustration of the Unsolvable Puzzle: A Developer's Perspective
Hello everyone, Hiroshi Studio here! Many of you have started to get your hands on our latest Android release, "Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle - Mahjong Solitaire & Shisensho." We've poured a lot of ourselves into this app, aiming to bring two classic mahjong tile puzzles into one accessible package. But beyond the fun layouts and cute tile options, there's a core philosophy that guided our development, something we considered absolutely non-negotiable: ensuring that every single game board is solvable. Today, I want to pull back the curtain and talk about why "no more stalemates" is so important to us, and what it means for you, the player.
Breaking Free from the "Stuck" Syndrome
If you've ever played Mahjong Solitaire or Shisensho (also known as Shisen Sho or Four Rivers), you've likely encountered it. That sinking feeling when you realize there are just a few tiles left, and no matter how you look at it, there's no valid pair to match. "I'm stuck," you think, "and it's not my fault; the board was just designed this way."
As a fellow puzzle game enthusiast, I know how demoralizing that can be. All the mental effort, the focus, the time spent – it can feel wasted when you hit an insurmountable wall that wasn't of your own making. It's a huge source of frustration, especially when you're trying to engage your brain and enjoy a relaxing yet challenging experience. Given that our game is called "Brain Training," it's paramount that players can fully immerse themselves in the mental workout without that sudden, jarring roadblock. For Hiroshi Studio, eliminating this "stalemate" scenario was essential to delivering the best possible brain training experience.
Hiroshi Studio's Absolute Mandate: Every Board is a Guaranteed Win
That's why, from the early stages of development, guaranteeing solvable boards became one of our top priorities for "Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle." This is particularly important for our primary target audience, seniors, who we want to ensure can enjoy the game without added stress. We want them to be able to think at their own pace and always feel a sense of accomplishment. With that in mind, we guarantee that every board generated in this game can be cleared completely.
You might be thinking, "Isn't that how all puzzle games should be?" The reality is, many mahjong puzzle games simply place tiles randomly, which can, by chance, result in an impossible starting configuration. At Hiroshi Studio, however, we committed to this "guaranteed clear" feature – a seemingly small detail that profoundly impacts the player's experience. This isn't just another feature; it's a foundational design principle and a promise to you, our players, to provide a game you can trust and enjoy for a long time.
The Secret Behind the Guarantee: Our Unique "Reverse Playback Algorithm"
So, how exactly do we achieve this "guaranteed clear" status? This is where we really put our heads together and innovated. To be completely candid, when I first started prototyping, I experimented with the standard random placement method. But I kept running into those frustrating "stuck" boards. I knew this wouldn't do. How could we solve this?
The idea that emerged was to create the board by "reverse-playing the clearing process." Let me break that down:
- First, imagine a completely empty board.
- Then, we randomly select a pair of tiles and place them onto the board. For Mahjong Solitaire, this means placing them in a way that satisfies the clearing conditions: "no tiles on top" and "at least one side free." For Shisensho, we calculate the placement based on the "two-turn path" rule.
- We repeat this "placement" step, as the reverse of clearing, until all tiles are on the board.
By following this method, the resulting board is guaranteed to be solvable by reversing the steps we just took.
Implementing this algorithm was quite challenging. Especially for Mahjong Solitaire, the logic for stacking tiles three-dimensionally while considering the complex conditions of "no tiles on top" and "at least one side free" required numerous iterations and refinements. Just as we focused on the 3D appearance of the tiles, we dedicated ourselves to perfecting the internal logic as well. For Shisensho, we integrated a logic that constructs the board in reverse while ensuring the "two-turn path" condition is met. There were moments of doubt, wondering if it was truly possible, but seeing it finally work was incredibly rewarding. This "reverse playback algorithm" is the secret to our "no stalemate guarantee" and represents our biggest challenge and source of pride in development.
Supporting "No Stalemates" with Player-Friendly Features
Of course, the "no stalemate" promise isn't solely dependent on the board generation logic. We've incorporated other features to ensure players can focus on the game without worry, reinforcing our core concept.
- Hint Function: Even with a solvable board, humans can overlook pairs, especially when tired or distracted. That's where the hint button (the lightbulb icon in the top right) comes in. It will illuminate two tiles that form a playable pair, helping you find your way forward without completely solving it for you (though it does slightly reduce your score). This feature is designed to support your discovery process, built upon the foundation of a guaranteed solvable board.
- Zoom Function: Particularly in the "difficult" Shisensho modes, the board expands, and many tiles appear. It can be challenging to get a good overview on a small smartphone screen. The pinch-to-zoom functionality, allowing you to scale the board from 50% to 200%, is invaluable for grasping the overall layout or examining details closely. A quick tap on the "Reset to 100%" button in the AppBar brings you back to the default view. This feature, combined with the certainty that a pair *must* exist, empowers you to search with confidence.
- Variety of Difficulty Levels and Modes: Beyond the standard "easy," "normal," and "difficult" settings, we offer variations like Time Attack, One-Turn Path (Shisensho only), No Outer Path (Shisensho only), and Chain Reaction (Shisensho only). The fact that "no stalemates" are guaranteed across all these modes means players can confidently tackle any challenge. We've worked hard to ensure there's always a fresh way to play.
- Tile Skin Switching: In addition to traditional mahjong tiles, we've included a "fruits and sweets" version that's more approachable for children. This reflects our desire for the game to be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. Even with these cute designs, the "no stalemate" guarantee holds true, and it offers a fun way to change up the visual experience.
While these features might seem common on their own, when they are integrated with our core "no stalemate" philosophy, they contribute to a deeper, more stress-free gaming experience.
The Invaluable Benefits of a "Stalemate-Free" Experience
The guarantee of a solvable board brings immeasurable benefits to players. At Hiroshi Studio, we aim to provide more than just a way to pass the time; we want to offer a truly fulfilling experience.
- Unadulterated Focus on Strategy: Without the nagging worry of a potential stalemate, players can fully concentrate on the core challenge: "How can I clear these tiles?" This allows for genuine brain training. By removing extraneous stress, we can more effectively target benefits like dementia prevention, improved memory, concentration, and critical thinking.
- Guaranteed Sense of Accomplishment: If you play through to the end, you are guaranteed to clear the board. This sense of achievement serves as a powerful motivator to keep playing and makes the brain-training benefits more tangible. We want players to consistently experience that satisfying "I did it!" feeling after each game.
- Consideration for Seniors: We especially want our senior players to enjoy the game at their own pace, free from anxiety and stress. The absence of stalemates provides them with unparalleled peace of mind. Combined with large, easy-to-see tiles, high-contrast visuals that are easy on the eyes, and simple tap controls, we've strived to create a game that is exceptionally user-friendly.
Our goal was never to create just another time-killing game. We aspired to create an experience that leaves players feeling mentally refreshed, thinking, "Ah, that was a good brain workout today."
As a Developer, Why Such an Obsession with "No Stalemates"?
To be frank, implementing this "no stalemate algorithm" required a significant investment of development effort. A simple random placement method would have allowed us to develop the game faster and dedicate more time to other features.
However, my commitment to this aspect stems from Hiroshi Studio's fundamental desire to provide the best possible experience for our players. As an independent developer, what I value most is not just fulfilling functional requirements, but also considering "what kind of value can we offer?"
"Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle" is my second released application. Just as I explored the unique appeal of map applications with my first project, "Sakura Map," I wanted to delve into the concept of a "stress-free thinking experience" within the puzzle genre. My deepest wish is for users to be able to engage in brain exercises with confidence and to their heart's content. To achieve this, I felt the "no stalemate guarantee" was paramount.
My hope is that through this game, many people will be able to enjoy brain training without worry, finding moments of calm and focused engagement in their daily routines. This, as a developer, is the greatest joy. The fact that the game is completely free to play, with no in-game advertisements – only banner and interstitial ads displayed between play sessions – is also a testament to this commitment to delivering the "best experience" without unnecessary interruptions.
Looking ahead, we plan to add features that further enhance the gameplay, such as statistics (clear counts, best times), daily challenges, and an achievement system. Naturally, these will also be designed with the "no stalemate" principle in mind.
Our Wish: For Everyone to Enjoy Brain Training with Peace of Mind
"Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle - Mahjong Solitaire & Shisensho" is more than just a mahjong tile-matching game. The "guaranteed clear" is Hiroshi Studio's promise to players, allowing them to immerse themselves in strategic thinking and experience genuine accomplishment.
This "no stalemate" philosophy was born from our strong desire to enable especially our senior players to enjoy brain training without stress. Combined with other thoughtful features like large tiles, high contrast, and the hint function, we aim to create a game that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
We will continue to value your feedback and strive to grow "Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle" into an app that is loved for a long time, with future updates planned for statistical features, daily challenges, and even an iOS release. We invite you to experience the dedication that Hiroshi Studio has poured into this puzzle game.
