Hello everyone, this is Hiroshi Studio!
We're thrilled to announce that our latest Android puzzle game, Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle - Mahjong Solitaire & Shisen-sho, developed entirely in-house, is almost ready for your hands! This game brings together two classic mahjong tile puzzles, Mahjong Solitaire and Shisen-sho, into one convenient app. True to its "Brain Training" name, we've designed it with seniors in mind, but with simple controls and an intuitive UI, we truly believe it's a game for everyone, from children to adults.
Today, we want to give you a candid look behind the scenes and share the passion and unique design choices we made to ensure you can enjoy mahjong puzzles to your heart's content, completely stress-free.
"Never Get Stuck": The Secret Behind Our "Guaranteed Clear" Boards
Have you ever played Mahjong Solitaire or Shisen-sho and felt that crushing disappointment of hitting a dead end? You spend so much time strategizing, only to realize the board is unsolvable. As a developer and a player myself, I know that frustration all too well.
But with Hiroshi Studio's Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle, you can banish that stress completely. We've implemented a unique logic that only generates boards that are guaranteed to be solvable to the very end. This commitment stems from our strong belief that players should never feel unfairly defeated by bad luck.
To give you a peek behind the curtain: simply randomizing tile placements often leads to unsolvable scenarios. That kind of frustration would completely undermine the relaxing experience we aimed for. So, we tackled this technical challenge head-on.
Our solution was to implement a somewhat unconventional algorithm: we "generate boards by reversing the clear procedure." In simple terms, we first define a goal state where "this sequence of moves will definitely clear the board!" From there, we work backward to construct the initial board layout. This intricate process ensures that every single puzzle you encounter is designed to be solvable.
This "no dead ends" guarantee is one of the game's biggest features, and it allows you to focus purely on the joy of solving the puzzle, free from the anxiety of hitting an impossible situation. We're incredibly proud of this achievement.
User-Centric UI/UX: Clarity, Simplicity, and Personalization
Given the "Brain Training" aspect, we had a strong desire to make the game comfortable for senior players. This led us to meticulously refine every aspect of the UI (User Interface) and UX (User Experience).
Prioritizing Visibility: Large Tiles and High Contrast
- We've adjusted the tiles to be displayed prominently, making them easy to distinguish even from a distance.
- Our design focuses on high contrast with the background, ensuring a comfortable experience even for those with presbyopia.
- Controls are kept incredibly simple: just tap the tiles you want to select. No complex flicking or pinching is required, allowing for intuitive gameplay.
- For those who still want a closer look, we've included a powerful zoom function (50% to 200%) via pinch gestures. This is particularly useful in the "Difficult" mode of Shisen-sho, where tiles can be densely packed, helping you grasp the overall layout. A quick tap on the App Bar's "100%" button resets the view instantly.
A Helping Hand: The Hint Function
Sometimes, even after deep thought, you just can't find the next move. Don't worry, we've got you covered! Tapping the 💡 button in the top-right corner will illuminate a valid pair, guiding you forward. While it slightly affects your score, it completely eliminates the stress of being stuck. This hint function is another crucial element in our stress-free design.
Tailoring Your Experience: Extensive Customization Options
To keep you engaged for the long run, we knew customization was key. The settings screen offers a wealth of options to match your mood and preferences:
- Beyond simply toggling BGM, you can choose from three background patterns: "Deep Green (Japanese Style)," "Cream," and "Night Sky (Dark Mode)." Perfect for a change of pace.
- And here's a personal touch I'm particularly proud of: the "Tile Artwork Switch" feature. Alongside traditional mahjong tiles, we've created a charming "Fruits & Sweets" version, designed to be appealing to children and women alike.
I actually designed all 34 unique SVG-based tile patterns myself! The Manzu (characters) are fruits, Pinzu (circles) are sweets, Souzu (bamboo) are juices, and Honor tiles are celebration items. I spent a considerable amount of development time on these designs, and I truly hope they make the game more approachable for those who might find traditional mahjong tiles a bit intimidating.
Global Reach: Multi-Language Support
From the outset, we wanted to share Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle with puzzle enthusiasts worldwide. That's why we prioritized multi-language support (Japanese and English) from early development. Utilizing Flutter's standard localization features (arb files + flutter_localizations), we've ensured seamless language switching. We're even considering expanding to Chinese and Korean in the future, aiming to reach an even broader audience.
Diverse Game Modes: Keeping the Fun Fresh
We understand that some players love to strategize at their own pace, while others crave a thrilling challenge. And sometimes, you just want to try a different set of rules. That's why, in addition to the "Normal" mode, we've prepared four exciting variations:
- Normal Mode: Perfect for those who want to solve puzzles at their leisure, without any time pressure.
- Time Attack Mode: A heart-pounding mode where you must clear the next pair within 10 seconds. It truly tests your quick judgment and focus.
- 1-Bend (Shisen-sho only): Elevates the difficulty of Shisen-sho by limiting the "up to two bends" rule to "only one bend." This demands deeper strategic thinking.
- No Outer Path (Shisen-sho only): Normally, the outer perimeter of the board can be used as a path, but not in this mode. Securing routes within the board becomes crucial.
- Combo (Shisen-sho only): Earn bonus scores by clearing tiles consecutively. It's incredibly satisfying to aim for efficient, chain reactions.
Switching between these modes according to your mood ensures endless enjoyment and prevents the game from ever feeling stale.
Our Honest Approach to Advertising: Completely Free, Completely Stress-Free
We all know that ads are often a necessary evil in free apps. But having an ad pop up mid-game and break your concentration can be incredibly frustrating. As a developer, this was a major concern for me.
Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle is completely free to play, and ads are necessary for us to continue development. However, we've prioritized preserving your user experience above all else, establishing clear rules for ad display:
- Absolutely no ads during gameplay.
- Ads are only displayed between plays.
- No in-app purchases or monetization elements.
This means you'll never be interrupted by an ad while you're engrossed in solving a puzzle. By limiting ads to after a stage clear or within menu screens, we ensure a truly stress-free environment for you to immerse yourself in the game. You can play with peace of mind.
Visual Quality and the Journey Behind the Code
This app marks Hiroshi Studio's second release. After developing our first app, "Sakura Map" (an app for locating cherry blossom spots across Japan), I was driven by a desire to create a game that could be enjoyed by an even wider audience. That's what led me to the mahjong puzzle genre.
During development, several points stood out as areas of particular dedication:
Pursuing Realism with 3D Tile Representation
Initially, the tiles had a rather flat appearance. Comparing them to competitor apps, I felt they lacked a certain three-dimensional depth. So, I significantly enhanced the visual quality by strengthening the layer offset (a stepped inclination), and adding shadows and highlights to simulate a light source from the top-left. I believe this significantly improved the sense of immersion, making the tiles feel truly stacked, and enhancing their selectability.
Our Tech Stack: The Challenge of Solo Flutter Development
We've embraced Flutter as our framework and Dart as our language. Flutter's cross-platform capabilities were ideal, allowing us to pursue efficient development with an eye toward a future iOS release. Key packages like flutter_localizations for multi-language support, audioplayers for BGM, shared_preferences for settings, google_mobile_ads for ads, and flutter_svg for SVG display were instrumental. As a solo developer, I actively embraced modern technologies, iterating and experimenting to craft the best possible app.
Conclusion: Aiming for an App Loved for Years to Come
In this post, we've pulled back the curtain on how Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle - Mahjong Solitaire & Shisen-sho was designed with an unwavering commitment to eliminating user stress.
Our simple goal was to allow you to enjoy mahjong puzzles deeply and comfortably, without the worry of getting stuck. To achieve this, we poured our developer's passion into every detail, from the unique board generation algorithm and UI/UX design to our ad policy and the playful tile artwork.
Hiroshi Studio will continue to listen to your feedback and release updates. We have so many plans for the future, including statistics features, daily challenges, an achievement system, and we're exploring an iOS version and further language expansions to Chinese and Korean.
