The Unsung Hero of Puzzles: Why Square Layouts Matter

Hello everyone, Hiroshi here from Hiroshi Studio. Today, I want to pull back the curtain on a detail that might seem obvious but is actually fundamental to the games we develop: the layout, specifically the square grid layout. This applies to our latest Android puzzle game, Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle - Mahjong Solitaire & Shanghai.

Our game brings together two classic mahjong tile puzzles, Mahjong Solitaire and Shanghai (also known as Shisen-Sho), into a single, accessible app. As you play, you might find yourself wondering, "Why are the tiles arranged in this particular way?" The answer is that the layout is a critical component, shaping the entire gaming experience. And at the heart of both Mahjong Solitaire and Shanghai lies the deceptively simple square grid layout. It's more than just how the tiles are placed; it's where the fun, the playability, and our developer's dedication truly shine.

The "Guaranteed Clear" Algorithm and Its Love Affair with Square Grids

One of our proudest achievements with Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle is the "guaranteed clear" feature. Most Mahjong Solitaire and Shanghai apps rely on random tile placement, which often leads to frustrating dead ends where the puzzle becomes impossible to solve. This is a major stressor, especially when you're deeply focused. Given our goal to create a "brain training" game that's approachable for seniors, eliminating this "stuck" scenario was paramount.

To solve this, we developed a unique algorithm: we generate the board by "playing the clear sequence in reverse." Instead of randomly placing tiles, we start with an empty board and work backward, stacking tiles in a way that logically guarantees a solvable path. This was a significant challenge during development.

And this "reverse algorithm" works exceptionally well with square grid layouts. The inherent order and structure of a square grid make it much easier for our system to manage tile placement and stacking, and to consistently apply our reverse-calculation logic. If we had to deal with complex, irregular layouts, implementing this algorithm would have been exponentially harder.

So, when you find yourself playing without the dread of hitting a "no-win" situation, you can thank our square-based board generation logic!

Mahjong Solitaire: The Depth of 97 "Square" Arrangements

For Mahjong Solitaire, we've crafted 97 distinct layouts. While they vary, they all build upon the fundamental square grid, creating a rich tapestry of challenges.

The core rule of Mahjong Solitaire – matching two identical tiles that are not covered by others and have at least one side open – is best explored within a structured layout. We use the stacking of tiles within these square formations to fine-tune the difficulty:

  • Easy: Features simpler square stacks with more tiles accessible from the top and sides opening up quickly.
  • Normal: Offers a balanced arrangement where tiles might be more concentrated in the center, and side openings occur a bit later.
  • Hard: Presents complex square structures with heavily overlapping tiles and deeply hidden pieces.

By varying the stacking methods and tile density within the square framework, we've created 97 unique puzzles. We also put significant effort into the 3D presentation of the tiles. Initially, they were quite flat, but we enhanced the layered offset (staggered appearance) and added shadows and highlights, simulating a light source from the upper left. This significantly boosted the visual quality and depth, making even the same square layout feel more realistic and easier to discern.

Shanghai: 60 "Square" Boards and the Strategy of Paths

Shanghai, on the other hand, is a tile-matching puzzle where you connect identical tiles with a path that bends no more than twice. This mode also features 60 layouts, all based on a square grid arrangement.

The brilliance of Shanghai's square layouts lies in the concept of "paths." The outer edges of the board also serve as usable pathways, which can initially make the game feel surprisingly easy. However, as tiles disappear, strategic use of these paths becomes crucial.

The challenge is to find efficient paths between tiles arranged in a neat square. Deciding which tiles to remove first to facilitate later moves is the core of Shanghai's strategic depth. Furthermore, Shanghai offers several variation modes:

  • One Bend Only: With a maximum of one bend, you'll see just how challenging a square layout can become.
  • No Outer Path: This mode restricts pathfinding to within the board's perimeter, demanding intense focus on internal pathways.
  • Chain Reaction: Earn bonus points for consecutive matches. This mode tests your ability to create efficient chains within the square grid.

These modes are designed to unlock the full potential of the basic square layout. A simple rule change transforms the strategy needed, showcasing the inherent depth of puzzles.

Square Layouts Enable "Playability" and "Visibility"

We've implemented several features in Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle to ensure a comfortable experience, especially for our senior players, and square layouts play a key role here too:

  • Large, High-Contrast Tiles: By making the tiles larger and ensuring clear contrast with the background, we help players with presbyopia easily distinguish tile types. The regular arrangement of the square grid makes it easier to take in the whole board even with larger tiles.
  • Simple Tap Controls: No complex gestures are needed. Tapping to select tiles is intuitive and straightforward thanks to the orderly placement of the square grid.
  • Zoom Functionality: Players can pinch-to-zoom the game board from 50% to 200%. This is particularly useful in Shanghai's "Hard" mode, where smaller tiles demand a closer look. The square structure ensures you don't lose your bearings when zooming in or out.

The tile graphic switching feature also enhances the appeal of the square layout. Beyond traditional mahjong tiles, we offer charming "fruit and sweets" versions for younger players. We even designed 34 unique SVG-based graphics, categorizing fruits (for manzu), sweets (for pinzu), drinks (for souzu), and celebratory items (for honor tiles). These cute graphics look even more appealing when neatly arranged in a square grid.

We also provide three background options (deep green Japanese style, cream, and a night sky dark mode), which, when paired with the square layout, create diverse visual atmospheres.

Conclusion: The Square Grid – Foundation and Frontier of Puzzle Design

I hope this deep dive from a developer's perspective has shed light on the significance of the square grid layout in Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle. This seemingly simple shape serves as the bedrock for our "guaranteed clear" system and forms the foundation for our 97 Mahjong Solitaire and 60 Shanghai layouts, as well as the variety of modes and features we offer.

At Hiroshi Studio, we strive to create puzzle games that are simple yet profound, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone. The humble square grid is a testament to this philosophy.

While currently in closed beta on Google Play, we eagerly anticipate its full release. We hope players will experience the dedication behind the "square layout" and enjoy Brain Training Mahjong Puzzle. We value player feedback and aim to nurture this app into a beloved title for years to come.
